Short presentation
I am a postdoctoral researcher working on sustainable development and blue foods as a member of the Blue Food Group at Uppsala University with Lina Mtwana-Nordlund and Gunilla Rosenqvist. I have a PhD in Marine Biology as well as an MSc. in Aquaculture. My interests include sustainable development, blue foods, ecosystem-based management, sustainable ecological aquaculture, integrated multi-trophic aquaculture, stable isotopes, fatty acid biomarkers, bivalves, and detritus.

I received a MSc. in Aquaculture in 2011 from Memorial University, where I worked under the supervision of Christopher Parrish. While at Memorial, I studied the capacity of blue mussels (Mytilus edulis) to bioremediate wastes generated by Altantic cod (Gadus morhua) in an integrated multitrophic aquaculture setting and how ingestion of cod wastes altered the biochemical profile of mussels. In 2020, I received a PhD in Marine Biology from the University of Maine, where I worked under the supervision of Carrie Byron. During my PhD I sought to understand how detrital material from coastal and estuarine primary producers (phytoplankton, seaweed, marsh grass) contributed to the diet of wild blue mussels. The goal of my research was to better understand how ecosystem resources (e.g., detrital material) could support sustainable food production. Currently, I am working with Lina Mtwana-Nordlund and Gunilla Rosenqvist at Uppsala University’s Gotland campus as part of Blue Food Group, along with other members of the Nordlund lab (Johann Stiepani, Chiara D'Agata, Sieglind Wallnrr Hahn, and Linda Eggertsen) I seek to understand how coastal and estuarine systems can support blue food production.
My research interests revolve around sustainable food production via aquaculture and fisheries. I am particularly interested in social ecological systems, ecosystem-based management, integrated multi-trophic aquaculture, and understanding the connections between food production systems (i.e., aquaculture) and their supporting ecosystems and food webs. My research has focused on using analytical tools, such as stable isotopes (δ13C and δ15N) and fatty acid biomarkers, to understand the diet composition of economically and ecologically important organisms (e.g., bivalves). I am particularly interested in understanding the capacity of detrital material to support consumers and how incorporation of detrital material into diets affects consumer growth rates and biochemical compositions.
