13.5.2 Centre for Medical Humanities and Social Science

Part of Department of History of Science and Ideas

Medical humanities is a multidisciplinary field that includes the humanities, the social sciences, the medical and health sciences, and pharmacy. Internationally, especially in the United States and Great Britain, the area is well established. In recent years research groups and networks with a focus on medical humanities have also been initiated at several universities in Sweden. Medical humanities includes the application of humanities and social science perspectives in medical education and clinical practices, as well as research in which issues related to medicine, disease and health are put in a historical, cultural and social context. The multidisciplinary approach means that medical humanities comprises a wide area and that it encompasses studies ranging from the individual’s experience of disease and health to issues related to healthcare and public health policy.
