My research is focused on exploring early microbial life on Earth and as such falls into the categories of geochemistry and astrobiology. I will be experimentally fossilising methanogen strains in various solutions to analyse the effects of initial fossilisation processes on these organisms. Understanding not just the environmental factors but also the intrinsic properties of the microbes themselves is essential to successfully identifying fossil microbes on Earth and on other planets.
